December through February transforms Shimla from a popular summer retreat into something genuinely magical — The Ridge dusted in white, the toy train creaking through snow-laden cedar forests, and the town half-empty but fully enchanting. If you've only visited Shimla in peak season, you haven't truly seen it.
When Does Shimla Get Snow?
Shimla town (2,200 m) typically receives its first snowfall in late December or early January. Kufri (2,600 m), just 16 km away, gets snow earlier and in heavier quantity. The period January 5 to February 20 has the highest probability of snowfall in Shimla town.

Road Conditions & Cab Tips for Winter Shimla
The Dharamsala–Shimla highway (NH-154A + NH-5) remains open through winter but requires an experienced driver familiar with snow and ice. Post-snowfall, the road to Kufri can be icy for 12–24 hours. Our JaryalTravels drivers carry snow chains for Kufri and Chail routes in winter.
